To Bernice
By TVD
Daily Illini, 24 Dec 1925

Her feet are slim
Adorable little hurrying things ...
Impatient of repose -
Dancing through life -
I love her feet!

Her hands are long and cool -
With swift little movements,
As a white yacht meeting open sea ...
I love her hands!
Her hair is brown spun silk -
With little golden lights,
As sunlight filtering in ...
An ancient Chinese Temple -
I love her hair!

Her brow is cool -
As the first glimpse of open sea -
From the jungle ...
Broad and restful.
I love her brow.
Her eyes are deep -
As sunlit pools in a forgotten forest,
Quickened with Autumn leaves.
I am lost in the wonder of her eyes.
I love her!

Historical Notes

"To Bernice" was written by TVD, not Sandy Doone. This guarantees that Sandy Doone is a pseudonym for Bradley Van Deusen. Two other pseudonyms that he will use at University of Chicago also appear later in the column - Blind Tiger and T'Envoi.
