A Grecian Temple
Old Soldiers' Drums, 1933, p.36
By TenEyck Van Dusen [Deusen]

A flash of white
Half buried in dull, green grass
A stone -

Mayhap in some distant day
This stone, fresh hewn
First saw the light of garish day
On some soft Grecian hillside
Garland strewn -
Perhaps some silv'ry temple to Diane
Rearing its ivory column to the moon.
Built cool and white and perfect
On a gentle hill
Where joyous girls with offerings came,
Their cheeks flushed with the morning sun
Chanting of the glories of the Goddess
In the spacious sanctuary
Where none might kill -

A closer glance -
No stone is this!
A whitened skull!
