John E. Bell's Recovery
Syracuse Herald, March 7, 1897

Mail Carrier John E Bell, who was buried in the snow slide for twenty-four hours between Ouray and Ironton, is resting comfortably at home in Ouray and is in a fair way of recovering. His neck and shoulders pain him owing to lying in one position while insensible for eighteen hours.

He has many callers and every one rejoices at his safe return to his family. His case is considered by old-time miners as being one which will be as unprecedented in a story of snow slides. Had not Toll Keeper Harvey Lewis observed him as soon as he did and come to his rescue, he would have fallen exhausted and perished. He was unable to remove the snow with the shovel and dug out large stones to make a passage way. He was formerly an employee of Judge Bell of Montrose. Had he not lodged near a running stream of water no human efforts could have saved him.

Mail Contractor Ollie Eldridge was indefatigable in his efforts to rescue his employee and only quit work when darkness and the terrible storm forced him to.
