Birds of Spring Arrive in Spring
Reno Evening Gazette, February 20, 1923, Page 6

Hundreds of pelicans, flying northward to their spring nesting grounds, were encountered between Sacramento and the Sierra summit yesterday afternoon by Harry W. Huking, air mail pilot, on his flight to Reno.

He reports flying close to the mammoth flock as they slowly winged their way toward the summit and he figures they will land today at Pyramid Lake, their greatest nesting point in the country.

Jack Bell, lover of birds and wild life, on a stroll this morning to feed his bird friends, reports seeing several robins and yesterday he encountered a large number of red-headed house flinch and, with meadow larks already in Reno, Mr. Bell forecasts an early spring.

The recent freezing weather cost the lives of literally hundreds of birds, including a few robins. In cleaning the snow and ice from house-gutters along the edge of roofs, many swallows were found dead.
