Cripple Creek Record of Kirch Kuykendall
Denver Post, June 22, 1903, page 3

Cripple Creek, Colo., June 22. - Kirch Kuykendall, who was shot and killed at Canon City this morning, served his country in the war with Spain as a member of Company G, First Colorado volunteers, but was unpopular with his comrades in arms.

When he returned to the district he became involved in ore stealing cases and, June 16, 1902, he and his companions engaged in a fight in the 400-foot level of Stratton's Independence mine with Manager Shipman, Lee Glockner, R. J. Grant, Jack Bell, George Gill and Alexander McDonald. Glockner was wounded in the shooting which followed the meeting, while Kuykendall and his companions - Hartley J. Lake and John B. Friedenstein - escaped.

When the men were run down a sensational trial followed, several witnesses being charged with perjury and disbarment proceedings being started against several attorneys. One of Kuykendall's pals turned state's evidence and his conviction followed.

The dead convict leaves two sisters in Cripple Creek - Mrs. Kate Lomkins and Miss Grace Kuykendall.
