Henry Livingston, Jr.
Henry Livingston's Poetry

A cool reflecting northern sage
It seems don't suit this reckless age
The sunburnt southrons one & all
For aqua fortis Jackson call
Declare his fire alone is able
To cleanse the Washingtonian stable
x
Till opposition can't be found

The poem begins with a fable describing a population
wanting a bit of excitement, and getting more than
they expected.

Andrew Jackson went up against John Q Adams and
DeWitt Clinton and lost to Adams in 1824,
then won the presidency in 1828. The race
was very personal.

And as an apex to the whole
And then to close the rigamarole
Xx up a kidnap'd Seminole
For hickory bosoms xx
To brush the cobwebs from the wall
And sweep the litter from the hall.
