When Rev. John Livingston escaped from Scotland, running from the threat of arrest for his inability to see the landing of King Charles on Scottish soil as a religious holyday rather than a holiday, he ran to Holland, a country with a world-wide reputation for tolerance and religious freedom. And when the Dutch emigrated to New York, they brought with them that tolerance, willingness to work hard, comfort in environments with people of varying cultural backgrounds, and respect for the value to society of education.
