Descendants of [Unknown] Morris

Generation No. 1

1. [Unknown]2 Morris ([Unknown]1 ) was born Abt. 1575.

Notes for [Unknown] Morris:
Some say the father of Lewis Morris and Richard Morris is William Morris from Monmouthshire, Wales. His grandson indicated that Monmouth Co., NJ was named for the birthplace of Lewis Morris. There does not appear to be any proof; however, a (presumably first) cousin of Lewis Morris was the son of a John Morris who married in Alcester, Warwickshire, England.

There were three brothers, and possibly a sister. Another (more distant) family member named Thomas Lewis of Barbados, who died shortly after 1650 leaving an orphan son, also had a son named Lewis Morris (my ancestor), who later was known as "Lewis Morris of Passage Point."

From "Lewis Morris Anglo-American Statesman, ca 1613-1691" copyright 1983, by Sam Stelle Smith.

"For purposes of identification, the author has labeled these three: Colonel Lewis Morris, Governor Lewis Morris and Lewis Morris of Passage Point. Governor Lewis Morris was the son of Colonel Lewis Morris' younger brother, Richard Morris - the son becoming the Colonel's ward at age one upon the sudden death of his mother and father." Lewis Morris of Passage Point was the son of a Thomas Morris, a "relation," and in his will, was indicated as "nephew," though this was sometimes another close relative, such as the child of a cousin. The man's name was Thomas Morris, which coincidentally was the name of Lewis's (surviving) first cousin, who was residing much of his life in New Haven, CT.

Memo: 9 generations

Children of [Unknown] Morris are:

2 i. Col. Lewis3 Morris, born Abt. 1613 in Tintern, Monmouthshire, Wales; died 14 Feb 1690/91 in "Morrisania", Bronx, NY. He married (1) Ann [Widow] Barton Abt. 1637. He married (2) Mary [Unknown] Bef. 1670 in Barbados; died Abt. 21 Feb 1690/91 in poss. NJ.

Notes for Col. Lewis Morris:
His story is told very well in the book "Lewis Morris, Anglo-American Statesman," 1983, Samuel Stelle Smith.

Lewis Morris was, at times, a privateer, a captive who was ransomed, Captain of a ship, a wealthy sugar-planter and refiner in Barbados. He owned much of what is now The Bronx, and became an iron ore smelter in New Jersey. He was guardian to a nephew who shared his name, son of his brother Richard, and to the son of a "relation" Thomas Morris, whose son was also named Lewis Morris. He had cousins in New Haven, Connecticutt. Thomas Morris of New Haven, CT is documented in this file, and his father, John Morris, was married to Anne Holyoke in Alcester, Warwickshire, England. This may give a clue to his family's origin, though the name Morris is definitely Welsh, and there is an indication from his descendants that Monmouth Co., NJ is named by him and for his ancestral home, indicating probably Monmouthshire, Wales (or England).

Notes for Ann [Widow] Barton:
Ann married 1st Thomas Barton, and was widowed.

Notes for Mary [Unknown]:
Mary was Lewis Morris's maidservant for several years, and died only a week after him. Though his will appeared to leave her much of his property and make her his executor, his nephew Lewis Morris (son of his brother Richard) was able to prove to the satisfaction of the Governor of New York that there were erasures and alterations. The will was in the hand of his number one servant, as were the alterations. As a consequense, the nephew was named executor and the will was not admitted to probate.

25. Hon. Robert Hunter5 Morris (Lewis (Gov.)4 , Richard3 , [Unknown]2 , [Unknown]1 ) was born Abt. 1700 in Trenton, NJ, and died 27 Jan 1764 in Shrewsbury, Monmouth, NY.

Notes for Hon. Robert Hunter Morris:
Robert Hunter Morris, born at Morrisania, N. Y., about 1700, was the second son of Governor Lewis Morris, who appointed him Chief Justice of New Jersey on the unanimous recommendation of the Council, to succeed Col. Robert Lettice Hooper, deceased. His commission, dated March 17, 1738 (1739 N. S.), was during good behaviour. It is published in N. J. Archives, IX., 207-9. (For a note on the significance of this provision in the commission of Judges, see N. J. Archives, IX., 323-6.) Chief Justice Morris was also named as a member of his father's Council, in the commission (1738) appointing the Governor, and sturdily defended the doughty Chief Magistrate on all occasions. In 1748 he was one of the three commissioners to run the northern boundary line of New Jersey. He had accompanied his father to England in 1735, and revisited that country in 1749, when he returned to assume the government of Pennsylvania he left the child with Will Shirley, who paid out œ70 or œ80 subsequently for its support. Writing in 1763, Morris asked his friend, John Penn, to make some inquiries about the child, of whom he had lost all trace, and whom he was anxious to have in America. He spent several years in England on his second visit, and was treated with respect and consideration. He sought an appointment as Lieutenant Governor of New York. Instead, John and Thomas Penn made him Governor of Pennsylvania, and he returned in 1754 to assume that office. For two years he enjoyed a continual disagreement with the Assembly of that Province, and then resigned. He had tendered his resignation of Chief Justice of New Jersey in 1754, but as it was not accepted he resumed the duties of the office in 1756. In 1757 he revisited England once more, and during his absence William Aynsley was appointed to succeed him, taking his seat on the bench at the March Term. 1758, but died July 6 of the same year. Nathaniel Jones was commissioned to fill the assumed vacancy, and presented himself at the March Term, 1760.
But Chief Justice Morris was on the bench. His commission was during good behaviour. True, he had resigned, but his resignation had not been accepted, and he had concluded to resume the position. His right to do this was sustained by his associate, Justice Samuel Nevill, in an opinion from the bench. Morris died suddenly on the night of January 27, 1764, at a party at Shrewsbury. He led out the parson's wife in a dance, opened the ball, danced down six couples, and then fell dead on the floor, in an apoplectic fit. He was buried at Morrisania, Westchester county, N. Y. Chief Justice Morris was a very remarkable man, and filled a large place in the public affairs of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Samuel Smith, the historian, speaks very highly of his abilities as a judge and as a speaker. He never married.--N. J. Archives. XI., 562-3; XXIV., 305.

Notes for Rev. Robert McKean:
Robert McKean (as he wrote his name) studied for the ministry. probably under the Rev. Francis Allison, D. D., and having been ordained in England, in 1757 was appointed by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts to be a missionery of the Church of England, at New Brunswick, his labors, however, often extending so far afield as Piscataway, Spotswood, Woodbridge, and more distant settlements in Central New Jersey. On taking charge of his mission he wrote home to the Society, January 8, 1758, that he "arrived at New Brunswick on the 16th of Dec., and was kindly received by his congregation, and had officiated regularly to them from that time." Writing again from New Brunswick, Feb. 5, 1758, to the Rev. Dr. Peter Bearcroft, Secretary of the Society, he says: "Since my arrival here I have wrote to you by two different Conveyances, one by the Pacquet, and another by means of a friend via Ireland. In them I have troubled you with a particular account of my Voyage and other proper occurrences, as also the kind reception I have met with and the happy prospect I have as yet in my mission." Young as he was, his indefatigable zeal and marked ability were speedily recognized. The College in Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania) conferred upon him the honorary degree of A. M., in 1760. When Gov. Thomas Boone arrived in New Jersey, in July, 1760, the clergy of the Church of England waited upon him with an address, presented by a committee of three, of whom Mr. McKean was one. He served on a similar committee to address Gov. Josiah Hardy in November, 1761. He was regular and faithful in his attendance upon the convention of clergy which met in Philadelphia, April 30-May 5, 1760, to discuss the affairs of the church in Pennsylvania and the Lower Counties; he and Mr. Samuel Cook, "two of the Society's worthy Missionaries of New Jersey, [attending] with the kind intention of giving their best advice and assistance in promoting the designs of the Convention." When the pulpit of St. Peter's church at Perth Amboy became vacant, in 1761, the people of that congregation "had so much their hearts set on Mr. McKean" that they were "utterly averse" to the Society's selection, and were correspondingly glad when the appointee declined to leave Litchfield, Conn., and in the course of a year Mr. McKean was transferred to Perth Amboy, where he arrived in February, 1763, with a notification of his appointment as Missionary, his services being restricted to that parish exclusively, at the request of the vestry. In 1764 Woodbridge was placed in his care, he visiting it once every three weeks. In these charges he labored with indefatigable zeal and assiduity, and manifestly had the confidence of the older clergy. His own experience of the hard ship laid upon young Americans who were obliged to go to England for ordination made him an ardent and perhaps intemperate advocate of the plan of appointing American Bishops--a cause so ably urged by Dr. Chandler. Mr. McKean studied medicine, and was a successful practitioner in that profession, and so much esteemed among his fellow medical men that he was one of the seventeen who organized the New Jersey Medical Society, in July, 1766, and was elected its first President. His parishioners did not object to his practicing, but they--at least some of them--did find fault when he sent in his bills. He also seems to have taught school at Perth Amboy.

Notes for Lewis Morris Rutherfurd:
Lewis Morris Rutherfurd; "b. at Morrisania, Nov. 25, 1816; Williams College, Massachusetts, 1833; studied Law for two years with William H. Seward; at Auburn, N. York, and one year with George Wood in the City of N.Y. Practiced law for three years with Peter Augustus Jay and afterward Hamilton Fish. He went to Europe in 1849 and returned in July, 1852, and never resumed the active practice of the law, but devoted his leisure time to astronomical pursuits. He carried on a long series of experiments with a view of arriving at the best instrumental and other adaptations of photography to astronomy. In 1862 he made and published observations on the spectra of the stars - the first after the striking discoveries of Bunsen and Kirchoff; he also made and distributed photographs of the solar spectrum taken with bisulphide of carbon prisms; this photograph was engraved and published in Schellen's translation of Secchis' book on the sun. Mr. Rutherfurd devised and described the mode of constructing the prisms used, and also a simple method of simultaneous adjustments of a battery of prisms for the angle of least deviation. In the course of his work on the star spectra he discovered and pointed out the value of the spectroscope in examining the achromatic condition of an object-glass and making use of this discovery was enabled in 1864 to construct an objective of 11½ inches aperature and 14 feet focal length, corrected for photographic rays, with which unsurpassed photographs of the sun, moon, and stars have been made. The first objective of this kind was a double achromatic combination of flint and crown glass; the second, made in 1868, was an ordinary achromatic of 13 inches aperture and 15 feet focal length, which could be corrected for photography by the attachment of a meniscus of flint glass directly in front of the objective, shortening its focal distance about twenty-seven inches. With one or the other of these objectives large numbers of astronomical photographs were taken, and have been measured with great precision by the use of a nicrometer devised and constructed for that purpose by Mr. Rutherfurd.

Having become convinced of the great value of the normal spectra produced by gratings, and being unable to procure them of sufficient precision, Mr. Rutherfurd, after much study and experiments, devised and constructed an automatic engine by which these gratings are ruled with great accuracy upon glass and speculum metal and have largely displaced prisms in the work of students of spectral analysis; with one of these gratings Mr. Rutherfurd produced and distributed, in 1876, a photograph of the solar spectrum on a large scale, which still remains unequalled. With a view of avoiding the errors
produced by changes of temperature and fluxure in large metallic circles, he devised and constructed a circle of glass upon which, with a diameter of nine inches, Mr. Rutherfurd claims that angles can be measured with greater precision that upon a metallic circle of three feet.

His work has been recognized both at home and abroad by medal, memberships, and decorations.

He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences; of the Royal Astronomical Society, etc., etc.; Trustee of Columbia College, 1858; Chairman of the Committe of the School of Mines; m. July 22 1841, in St. Mark's Church in the Bowery, Margaret Stuyvesant, dau. of Elizabeth Winthrop and Rev. John White

She married (1) William Gatewood Fauquier 17 May 1876, son of John Fauquier and Eliza Malcolm. He was born 26 Feb 1843 in Glastonbury, Hartford, CT, and died 12 Nov 1888 in Jersey City, Hudson, NJ. She married (2) Restora Mealer Fauquier 04 Jun 1890 in Nutley, Essex, NJ, son of William Fauquier and Anthem Hardwick. He was born 10 Dec 1843 in Donaldsonville, Ascension, LA, and died 19 Aug 1901 in Jersey City, Hudson, NJ.

Notes for Restora Mealer Fauquier:
An only child of a carpenter with property and slaves, curiously not mentioned on census of 1850 with parents (at school, with relatives?). Variously claimed to be French, one census lists him as from "Maine", another "Alabama", although family lived in Donaldsonville, LA, and he was at least fourth generation American. His children were raised by their aunt in Mississippi, and his wife died young. He left his wife and after she died he married his second cousin's widow in New Jersey.

Married in Carondolet St. Church, New Orleans by father of the bride, pastor Joseph Burch Walker.

Restora lived at 307 Coliseum and was a clerk in 1868. He was a property clerk living at 266 6th in 1870. His address in 1871 was 293 Carondelet. He was a cotton clerk at Richardson & May, living on Melpomene at Magazine in 1873. He lived at 493 S. Rampart in 1874. He lived at 120 Philip, with the Rev. JB Walker, his father-in-law, in 1876. He was a bookkepper for AW Hyatt in 1877, and moved to 562 1/2 Camp in 1878. He was a clerk for the C. St. L. & N. O. RR, living at 489 Baronne in 1879. His wife died in 1888.

Other than in New Jersey as a Quaker name, I have only found a similar name on one other individual, coincidentally from that area of SC from which the Hardwick family was, and not known to be related:
Key Restored Mobley born 11 Mar 1878. I am convinced that in the Fauquier & Mealer families, this name is a patriotic name and not a Quaker name.
