LUCILLE MULHALL KEPT
MARRIAGE SECRET A YEAR
GAVE HER LAST ROPING EXHIBITION IN WICHITA

Wichita Eagle, 23 Oct 1908

She Will Go on Vaudeville Stage With Her Husband, Martin Van Bergen, Whom She Secretly Wedded Last September

Miss Lucille Mulhall, champion horsewoman of the world, and roper of wild steers, has roped a husband, and her last public appearance in a wild west contest was made in Wichita last week. Miss Mulhall placed her brand on Martin Van Bergen, of Kansas City, over a year ago, in Brooklyn, N. Y., but kept the matter a secret until yesterday, when the fact was announced at Topeka.

The romance began at St. Louis, three years ago, when Mr. Van Bergen was singing with the Chicago Symphony orchestra. Miss Mulhall was visiting in St. Louis at the time, and met Mr. Van Bergen. A vaudeville act was prepared for Miss Mulhall, her brother and Van Bergen, by Zack Mulhall, and they toured the east.

In September, 1907, Miss Mulhall and Van Bergen were married in Brooklyn by a justice of the peace. Miss Mulhall continued her roping exhibitions, however, and no announcement of the wedding was made. Miss Mulhall gave her last exhibition here on Friday of last week, with her horse and rope, and has announced that she will go into vaudeville on the Corpheum circuit, with her husband.

Another marriage ceremony is to be performed, as Miss Mulhall is a Catholic, and her husband has embraced that faith since his marriage.

Miss Mulhall has gained a world-wide reputation as a rider and has appeared in all the big cities of the United States in the last few years. She is a wonderful horsewoman, adn the horse which she rides is one of the best trained animals in the country.

The Mulhalls are well known in Wichita and have many friends here. Miss Mulhall attended school here for some time. The fact of her wedding has been known to but very few, however, and the announcement comes as a complete surprise to most of her acquaintances.
