BIG ROPING CONTEST 23d
MEXICAN CATTLE FROM BLACK HILLS OF OLD MEXICO WITH BIG HORNS

Springfield Missouri Republican, 17 Apr 1904

George Elser, who represents Col. Mulhall, is in Springfield. Col. Mulhall is commissioner of stock at the World's fair and live stock agent of the Frisco. He is having stock shipsments into St. Louis and has left about 50 head of steers and 26 head of horses for an exhibition at the old fair grounds April 23. The horses are genuine western bronchos and the cattle are lean, big horned Mexican steers, brought from the Black Hills of Old Mexico. These steers are raised down there by the Mexicans for bull fighting purposes.

Miss Lucille Mulhall, daughter of Col. Mulhall, will be here and take part in the roping.

The world's record in roping a steer, which is the time from the start of the run until the steer is tied, is 21 1-2 seconds and is held by Jim Hopkinsl. Miss Lucille Mulhall has a time of 18 seconds but as there was some dispute over it, it was not put on record.

Little Mildred Mulhall will also be here on the 23rd. She is a sister of Miss Lucille and only eight years old. She cannot yet handle a wild Mexican steer, but she can rope a calf to perfection and will participate in the coming show by riding bucking cow ponies. She is but a baby and the pride of the "boys."

Such roping exhibitions have shown in Springfield before; none that will have the genuine atmosphere of the wild west as this. The cattle bred and raised in the Indian Territory and Oklahoma are, more or less domesticated and most of the cowboys of this part of the country don't show the speed and skill as do the ones brought from the prairies where such work is their daily routine.

These Mexican cattle, being raised, ro rtaher allowed to live, for bullfighting purposes, are lean, wiry brutes, weighing about 700 pounds. They are fleet as deer and when the gate opens and a race commences after the big horned steer, undoubtedly it will be exciting and satisfying to the utmost the longing for the wild west of any ten-year-old boy.
